Model 242A from July 1935 - a VERY RARE find and great item for your collection! All original including the vent (green on the inside), and globe (straight letter COLEMAN with only the word PYREX on the back).
As you may be aware there are two variations of the 242A. The earliest had holes in the vent for the bale, the flat pump handle with no check valve, and'242A' stamped on the collar; followed by slotted openings for the bale and a hole in the pump handle with a check valve, and a collar with one side blank and the other with lighting instructions. This 86 year old Coleman camping lantern is in nice condition for an item this age. I was able to light the lantern and ran it for a few hours about a year ago after cleaning the lantern and doing a complete disassembly to check all was in good condition. Today I did the following.
Cleaned and reinstalled the check valve. Installed a new leather pump cup and ensured the lantern would still pump up, hold pressure, and hissed when the valve is opened. These lanterns are very old antique items so there are signs of wear and use which may include minor chips on the vent, minor loss of paint or nickel, small dings, light surface rust on the bottom, etc. Please study the photos for the best description.
