Antique Handlan 39 Illinois Central (ICRR) Railroad Lantern Clear Globe
This railroad hand-signal kerosene lantern was manufactured by the Handlan Manufacturing Company of St. Louis, Missouri around 1930 to 1940. The lamp has a metal body, a glass globe encircled by protected metal wire, and a metal handle and base. The Bottom of the lamp is inscribed with the Handlan logo and the text HANDLAN/ST. Before the advent of portable two-way radios, train crews communicated via hand signals during the day, and lantern signals during periods of low visibility or at night. Lanterns with red globes were used by station agents to signal a train to stop. There are a wide range of tall and short globe lanterns bearing the marking "Handlan-Buck", "Handlan", "MM Buck", or other various combinations that were used over the course of many years. Handlan Buck lanterns can be found with virtually every possible combination of options depending on the specifications of the railroad, the time period, and other options and features they offered at different times.
Some options and variations commonly seen: single vs double wire guards, flat plate vs round wire verticals, wire bottom vs bell bottom, insert vs twist off founts, flat top vs domed top, the profiles of the vertical guards can be found in many different shapes.
