VINTAGE COLEMAN LANTERN 200A Rare BURGUNDY/MAROON COLOR 1 /1962 Single Mantle

VINTAGE COLEMAN LANTERN 200A Rare BURGUNDY/MAROON COLOR 1 /1962 Single Mantle. Some discolorations, scratches, see all pics.

Collectors will know what this is. It is'nearly perfect' Coleman 200A in the burgundy (some say maroon) color, which is RARE. It is date stamped on the bottom 1-62, which stands for "Jan 1962" and is from a run of this unintended color variant. This is an amazing example of this nearly 60-year-old Coleman lantern. It has some minor rub marks on the fount, and the original burgundy colored paint on the porcelain ventilator is in excellent condition, with only some dark brown residue which does come off, but I didn't want to scrub too hard, just did a light soap water wash. Inside the ventilator is still a dark bluish colored enamel that only shows some minor scratch, but no moisture pitting. It was stored in a garage in Montana or Colorado where the dry air has kept it very nice. The original fuel cap was aparently replaced at some point with the solid brass one you see in the pictures, the pyrex globe is in pristine condition, with no chips, cracks or other defects. Also included in the box was one original pack of Coleman Silk Lite Mantles.

To maintain its current condition, I have not filled / tested it, but I assume by the condition that it is in solid working order. The box has taken some of the wear through the years, and has remnant strapping tape around the lower 3, to keep it from dropping through when moving. There was pamphlets and paperwork still inside the box.

There is even an old Kmart receipt from 1968 for mantles costing 28 cents! Please see the photos for overall condition. Please view all photos carefully and ask as many questions as necessary before purchasing this lantern. If you don't know what this lantern is and its associated value, here is the brief history (I found in another listing) why these (that are in good condition) are a rare item to have in a collection: This specific burgundy 200A was built in January 1962. Although the 200A is an extremely common lantern, there are some rare editions, such as this one in a maroon hue, as opposed to a lighter - more'cherry red.

Coleman made the Model 200A for 32 years beginning in 1951. By 1953 this model had a black base rest and in 1961 the lantern was finished in maroon rather than red but most years, as in 1960, it was red with an aluminum base rest. The actual production months were from 10/1961 through 4/1962. The burgundy lanterns were in production until April of 1962.

There are burgundy lanterns dated 9/61 and 5/62, most likely because of the adjoining months of the production run. That being said, the rest of 1962 and some time into 1963 the founts were a deeper red than the normal paint and this would probably be because Coleman was using up the rest of the burgundy paint that was surplus and gradually mixed it in with the normal paint.

This is quite evident if you have a series of 200A's from March of 1962 into the middle of 1963, you can see that the paint went from a dark maroon / burgundy and kept getting lighter.
