Vintage Pierced Punched Tin Candle Lantern Paul Revere Style Colonial Primitive
Wonderful old pierced/punched metal candle lantern in the traditional American Colonial / Paul Revere style. The lantern features an attractive cylindrical body extensively decorated with hand-worked-looking pierced sunburst / radiating geometric patterns composed of round punches and elongated slots. A tall conical ventilated top continues the punched decoration and incorporates larger circular ventilation openings. At the top is a substantial rolled metal ring for carrying or hanging the lantern.
The curved hinged access door opens to reveal the interior and the surviving single cylindrical candle socket/holder mounted at the base. Repeating sunburst / radiating geometric decoration. Dark aged surface with green oxidation/patina. Primitive / Colonial American lighting form. Overall height including ring: approximately 12 inches. Base diameter: approximately 5 inches. The lantern is being offered as a vintage Colonial / Paul Revere-style pierced metal candle lantern.Its form and construction are characteristic of traditional early American punched-tin candle lanterns; however, the exact maker and date have not been established, and no maker's mark has been located. It is therefore not represented as a definitively authenticated 18th- or 19th-century piece. This is an older decorative/utilitarian object and shows considerable surface character.
Expect oxidation/verdigris, darkening, scratches, finish variation, residue, soldered joints, minor deformation and general wear throughout. There are areas that may represent historical repairs or reinforcement. The aged surface has intentionally been left untouched rather than aggressively cleaned.
