A beautiful pair of old Japanese garden offering lanterns, or shrine incense burners or lamps. They have a beautiful patina and are age-appropriately oxidized and sound. They have rice paper with lantern oil residue but were long ago electrified. I was told they are still electrically functional, but always recommend rewiring vintage lamps, which is the one thing a person can to do an antique that does not negatively affect the value. The electrical components date to early electricity usage, which dates the lanterns. They are bronze and gorgeous, heavily oxidized and hail from an estate of very knowledgeable and learned collectors of asiatic antiquities. The plugs are "Ocean" brand bakelite and are not polarized, so this dates them as electrified sometime before the midcentury. The light sockets are also collectibly old. They hold chandelier tip bulbs, but should have night light bulbs or other small ones.
The rice paper is old and funky, and shows signs from the interior of being near heat. The top unscrews from the lantern and the lantern unscrews from the base. 9 1/2" tall by 3 1/2" across the base. I have not so much as dusted these lanterns; they are original and as-found.
I have a second, matching large pair to post as well, so please check my other auctions.
